Policies aim to strengthen Canada’s north

The federal government has introduced policies designed to strengthen standards for environmental protection through the reclamation of producing mine sites.

The policies were developed in consultation with industry, territorial governments, Aboriginals, and environmental groups.

“These policies reflect the government of Canada’s commitment to ensure that mining operations do not leave a legacy of environmental and human health hazards,” says Robert Nault, minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

Nancy Karetak-Lindell, MP for Nunavut, says the policies will help ensure the development of a strong resource management base in Nunavut.

A minesite reclamation policy for the Yukon, based on the same principles and standards as those in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, is in the works.

To order copies of the policies, telephone 1-819-997-0380.
