A joint subsidiary of Luxembourg-based Minorco and British-based Albright & Wilson has signed a deal to supply phosphate to several South American countries.
The company will be owned equally by the partners and based in Brazil. A 90,000-tonne-per-year plant will be built near the town of Cubatao, in the vicinity of an existing plant owned by Minorco subsidiary Copebras. The new, US$15-million facility is expected to come on-stream at the end of 1998.
Much of the phosphate will be shipped to Chile.
Copebras, the region’s largest producer of phosphate, will supply the operation with rock and green phosphoric acid from its existing Brazilian operations. Albright & Wilson, a chemical company with operations in 16 countries, will supply technological support.
Plans also call for the construction of a purified wet phosphoric acid plant for the production of other phosphate-based products.
