Phelps buys evaluation tool

Phelps Dodge Mining, the world’s second-largest producer of copper, has ordered its third QemSCAN system, a device that automatically analyzes crushed ore and drilled samples.

The technology employs an electron microscope to measure particles and identify the minerals present. An electron beam scans the sample, generating X-ray photons, which are then used to determine chemical composition.

QemSCAN was invented by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), a government-funded body based in Dickson, Australia.

Phelps Dodge will house the unit at its Process Technology Center in Safford, Ariz.
