Peruvian strike over

An end to the 8-week-old miners’ strike in Peru appears to be over. The government and miners’ union federation reportedly have signed an accord which will send the country’s 60,000 miners back to work.

Cost of the strike to the country, blessed with an abundance of various metals, is estimated to be about $300 million. Reason for the strike was to force compliance by mine companies with a government- union pact which allows labor contracts to be negotiated jointly with all mining operations as opposed to company-by-company negotiations.
