More than 4,000 delegates registered for the 1988 convention, taking over Toronto’s Royal York Hotel. Anthony Andrews, PDAC managing director, said early indications are the turnout March 5-8 could be equal to, or better than, last year.
Theme of this year’s convention is Canadian mineral discoveries: maintaining the momentum. Among the topics to be discussed during the keynote session is “The effect of CEIP on exploration funding.” CEIP is the incentive grant program introduced this year by the federal mineral exploration government after it cut back on the depletion allowance (an integral part of previous flow-through financing) allowed investors in mining exploration companies.
Among the various morning and afternoon discussion sessions this year is one featuring talks on exploration and the environment. A special workshop on base metals exploration is also planned. The “new discoveries” session will feature talks on the SNIP and Sulphurets projects in British Columbia, Kremzar and Magnacon in northern Ontario; and the Isle Dieu zinc mine and Silidor and Pelletier Lake projects in northwestern Quebec.
Scheduled to speak at the Monday luncheon is Dr D. W. Strangway, president of the University of British Columbia, and at the Wednesday luncheon, W. A. Gatenby, chief executive officer of Cameco, the giant uranium producer headquartered in Saskatchewan. The annual awards banquet and dance is set for the Monday evening.
