The recent annual convention in Toronto of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada saw a diverse group of mining personnel scoop up this year’s awards.
David Palmer, president and CEO of Probe Mines, won the Bill Dennis Award for a Canadian discovery or prospecting success for his discovery of the Borden gold project located near Chapleau, Ont.
Noront Resources received the Environmental & Social Responsibility Award for its accomplishments and commitment to social initiatives in northern Ontario. The company prides itself on having an open and honest dialogue with all stakeholders, especially the First Nations that surround the company’s Eagle’s Nest Project in the James Bay lowlands of northern Ontario.
The PDAC bestowed Bill Pearson with its Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contribution and dedication to Canada’s mineral and exploration industry in which he has worked for over 40 years, describing him as having “served as a tireless and dedicated pioneer and leader of his profession at both the provincial and national level.” His lengthy resume includes being the founding president of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario from 2000 to 2003.
For his strong and continued efforts to encourage and mentor Cree youth to pursue a career in mineral exploration, Sam Bosum was awarded the Skookum Jim Award for Aboriginal achievement. He has been working with mining and exploration companies in the Chibougamau region of Quebec for nearly 50 years, including as a director.
Matt Manson, president and CEO of Stornoway Diamond, picked up the Viola R. MacMillan Award for company or mine development for leading Stornoway’s team in the continuing development of the company’s Renard diamonds mine project in Quebec’s James Bay region.
Ivanhoe Mines’ Kamoa discovery team won the PDAC’s Thayer Lindsley Award for international mineral discoveries for its discovery of the Kamoa copper deposit in the Central African Copperbelt of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
