Old mine eyed as garbage dump

An abandoned open pit iron ore mine at Kirkland Lake, Ont., may see life again as a garbage dump. Pending provincial approval and a successful environmental-assessment hearing, Metropolitan Toronto plans to transport 1.5 million tonnes of garbage per year to the old Adams mine of steelmaker Dofasco Inc.

The Adams and its sister mine, the Sherman, at Temagami, Ont., were closed at the end of March of this year. Material from the mines was used to produce iron ore pellets.

In addition to the jobs created by the garbage project, Kirkland Lake could benefit from spinoff businesses.

Metro Toronto would purchase the land and pay by the tonne to dump its garbage. It would also agree to construct a recycling plant at the mine site and donate property for an industrial park focusing on recycling techniques.
