OBITUARY — James Zimmerman

Well known Canadian geological engineer James Zimmerman died recently. He was 52.

After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1962 with a degree in geological engineering, Zimmerman joined Inco and worked on gold projects, mainly in Ontario and Quebec, until the mid-1970s.

He then consulted for several years, eventually moving to Saskatchewan to work as chief geologist for Gulf Minerals. Under his direction, several orebodies were discovered and developed, including Collins Bay and Eagle Point.

Zimmerman joined Minatco as chief geologist in 1980 and helped develop the McLean Lake uranium deposits to pre-production.

Donations to his memory can be made to the James R. Zimmerman Memorial Fund at the University of Toronto. Proceeds will fund a scholarship or bursary in geological engineering.
