OBITUARY — James Sibley Hastings

James Hastings, a former vice-president of Pegasus Gold, has died. He was 73.

Born into a military family in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1925, Hastings graduated from the Georgia Military Academy before being sent to Europe as an infantryman. His unit served as reinforcements at Bastogne, Belgium, a pivotal clash during the Battle of the Bulge. His military career continued into the 1950s, when, as a member of the Army Reserve, he was recalled to serve as a combat engineer in the Korean War.

Hastings later returned to school, earning a master’s degree from the Colorado School of Mines. In the early years of his professional career, he worked as a pit engineer in Minnesota and as an underground geologist in Colorado. He worked for such companies as Oliver Iron Mining, Atomic Energy Commission, New Jersey Zinc, Union Carbide, Hecla Mining, FMC, The Coastal Corp., Gulf Mineral Resources, and Gold Fields Mining.

Upon his retirement in 1987, he was vice-president of Pegasus Gold. He later formed a consulting business based in Colorado. Hastings also served as an instructor at the Colorado School of Mines and was a member of the Advisory Board at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

He is survived by wife Bonnie and daughter Kathryn Ann.
