OBITUARY Harvey Stevenson Southam

Harvey Stevenson Southam, senior vice-president of Southam Business Communications Inc. responsible for Canadian publishing including The Northern Miner, died suddenly May 31 in Toronto.

Southam was born in Vancouver May 12, 1948. After graduating from the University of Victoria with a B.A. in 1972, he worked as a reporter first at the Winnipeg Tribune, then at The Province in Vancouver. He was assistant business editor at The Vancouver Sun from 1976 to 1979 and was executive producer at CKVU television station in Vancouver from 1979 to 1981.

In 1982 he was a founding partner of Pacific West Equities of Vancouver, an independent magazine publisher. In 1989 he joined Southam Business Communications, a subsidiary of Southam Inc. involved in magazine and newspaper publishing, as vice-president and editorial director. Earlier this year, he was appointed senior vice-president.

He was a great-grandson of William Southam who in 1877 purchased The Hamilton Spectator, the beginning of Southam Inc. which is today one of Canada’s largest media organizations.

“Harvey has played a significant role in helping to guide and redirect the fortunes of our company,” said William Ardell, president of Southam Business Communications. “His leadership will be missed.”
