Obituary Arvid Thunaes

A Norwegian immigrant, who played a major role in uranium research and development in Canada, died recently at age 86.

Arvid Thunaes, a metallurgical engineering graduate of the Norwegian Institute of Technology, came to Canada in 1924.

In the years since that time he played a key part in government research on systems for the treatment of uranium ores, and in the uranium industry itself was manager of research and development for Eldorado Mining and Refining (now Eldorado Nuclear).

In tribute to his work, he was the recipient of the Inco Medal of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (in 1974) and was awarded the Centennial Medal in 1967. He also received an honorary degree in science from Queen’s University.

Mr Thunaes is survived by a daughter, Marie, two sisters in Norway, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
