NO HEADLINE (April 09, 1990)

TEXT:

The American Mining Congress (AMC) criticizes the proposed convention on the regulation of Antarctic mineral resources activities, noting that it discourages private companies to search for ore deposits there. “Should an explorer be fortunate enough to have the opportunity to successfully conclude the exploration phase,” says AMC Vice-President Keith Knoblock, “there is no assurance that one could proceed to the development stage even if a commercial ore deposit had been identified.”

Knoblock predicts there will be no hard mineral exploration and development in Antarctica for decades to come because of the high risks and large costs involved.
