NEWS ROUNDUP — Cominco delays increase in nickel output

A production increase planned for later this year was delayed by the owners of the Glenbrook nickel smelter because of current nickel market conditions.

The smelter, near Riddle, Ore., is owned 50% each by Cominco (TSE) and Cominco Resources International (TSE).

The companies, and ore supplier Societe Miniere du Sud Pacifique of New Caledonia, agreed to delay the planned production increase and review operating rates on a monthly basis.

Glenbrook is now expected to produce about two million pounds per month of nickel in ferronickel, near the level achieved in the third quarter but well below the smelter’s capacity of three million pounds per month of nickel in ferronickel.
