NEWS ROUNDUP — Cardinal plans new coal mine

Plans are under way to build Alberta’s first coal mine since 1982.

The Cheviot project will be developed at a former mine site south of Hinton at a projected cost of $250 million.

Cardinal River Coals is seeking new material for its coal export contracts with Pacific Rim customers. The company has been exporting coal to Japan from its nearby Luscar mine, where reserves are being depleted after 25 years of operation.

Startup is scheduled for 1998. Cardinal, owned jointly by Luscar and Consol of Canada, estimates that Cheviot has reserves to meet export contracts for the next 20 years.

The environmental assessment and approval process is expected to take 2-3 years.
