Nevada teachers learn about mining

More than 100 Nevada teachers gathered in the eastern city of Ely for the 15th annual minerals education workshop. The event was sponsored by the state’s operating mines, supplier companies, and the Nevada Mining Association (NMA).

The workshop was designed to give teachers “hands-on” experience that they can bring to the classroom. The teachers and administrators spent two days learning about minerals, geology, mining, earth science, chemistry, map reading and the environment.

NMA President Russ Fields says the goal was to help teachers learn how to relate mining and minerals to students in ways that are both educational and entertaining. “We’ve found the workshops to be a successful way for the mining industry to educate and engage our schools,” he says.

The workshop also featured mine tours, gold panning with two “old-time” prospectors, and speakers from industry organizations.
