Morrissette picks up three association safety awards

N. Morissette Canada scooped up three awards at a special safety luncheon held in Vancouver at the 47th annual meeting and convention of the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association.

Dale Fowler, president of N. Morissette from Haileybury, Ont., accepted the safety plaques presented to his firm by Gaetan Gagne, director and safety chairman of the CDDA.

Fowler picked up the George Lemay safety award for Class A companies, surface drilling; the George Lemay safety award for Class A companies, underground drilling; and the Henry Skowronski memorial award for safety. The latter award is presented for the best reduction in lost-time accidents on a percentage basis.

St. Lambert Drilling, a consistent winner in recent years, was once again given the George Lemay safety award for Class B companies, surface drilling. This award was accepted by Raymond Audet, who is based in the company’s office in Valleyfield, Que.

The George Lemay safety award for Class B companies, underground drilling, was presented to Redpath Drilling, with Ian Pond accepting the honors on the company’s behalf.

The number of hours worked is used to distinguish between Class A and Class B awards.

Clay Wittchen of Falconbridge’s Kidd Creek division accepted the George Lemay safety award for mining. This division of Falconbridge, based in Timmins, Ont., also won the award at last year’s annual meeting in Quebec City.

Because the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association has been promoting a safer drilling industry for years, the presentation of safety awards are a highlight of the association’s annual convention each year.

At this year’s annual meeting, C.D. (Bud) MacDonald of Advanced Drilling (Surrey, B.C.) was elected president of the CDDA, while Bob Morgan of Major Drilling (New Brunswick) was elected vice-president. The association has about 52 member companies, 35 associate members and seven mining companies as members.
