Mint to boost silver content

The Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa said it plans to increase the silver content in two of its major collector coin programs.

The annual commemorative dollar coin will be struck in 1992 in .925 or sterling silver. The silver dollar was first issued in 1935 in .800; the series of cased silver dollars began in 1971 and has been .500 (50% silver, 50% copper) since.

Next year, to mark the 125th anniversary of Confederation, the Mint will issue collector editions of the twelve 25 cents and one $1 coins. The 25 cents coins will be struck in proof finish only and in .925 sterling silver; the dollar coin will be struck in proof finish only but its alloy will be the usual nickel with bronze coating.
