Minnesota Geologic Survey releases new field-mapping data

The Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) has released a geologic map of the state’s east-central region at the scale of 1:100,000.

The map is a product of recent field mapping, analysis of existing drill information, geophysical interpretation and the drilling of 40 scientific test holes.

The map is intended to contribute to the geologic understanding of this complex, largely magmatic geologic terrane which has potential for mineral exploration.

An important outcome of the mapping program was the delineation of Proterozoic volcanic and clastic rock sequences, which may be equivalent to rocks of the Wisconsin magmatic terranes that host deposits of metallic minerals. The map highlights previously unknown faults and broad shear zones within Archean and Proterozoic bedrock that may be of interest to those seeking mineralization related to major regional structures.

Information is available from the MGS by phoning (612) 627-4782.
