Dollar value of trading in mining shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange in August increased to $570.3 million, a dramatic 102.7% increase over the $485.8 million traded in July.
Share volume in mining shares in August amounted to 78.3 million. That’s a 59.1% increase over the 49.2 million shares which changed hands in July.
Looking at the year to date, $3.421 billion was traded in mining shares in the first eight months compared to $2.362 billion traded in the same eight month period of 1985. Share volume in mining shares amounted to 502.5 million in the first eight months of this year compared to 326.1 million in the first eight months of 1985.
Total dollar value of trading on The Toronto Stock Exchange in August also enjoyed an increase. Some $4.24 billion traded that month, 1.4% higher than the $4.18 billion traded in July.
Total August share volume was up slightly by 0.4% to 342.0 million shares compared with 340.7 million shares traded in July.
In comparison with August, 1985, total dollar value was down this August by 2.0% to $4.243 billion while share volume was up by 13.8% to 342.0 million shares.
Trading in both value and volume for the first eight months of this year has surpassed trading in the comparable 1985 period. Dollar value traded increased by 55.2% to $44.5 billion compared with $28.7 billion traded in the same period a year ago.
Share volume in the first eight months of this year amounted to 3.377 billion versus 2.093 billion traded in the same period of 1985, an increase of 61.4%.
