Metal snips (October 02, 1989)

St. Louis-based The Doe Run Co. plans to build a $34-million(US) facility in Boss, Mo., to recycle lead, plastic and acid from used automobile and industrial batteries.

It is estimated the new plant could produce 60,000 tons per year of refined lead metal from 120,000 tons of spent batteries and other lead-bearing materials. The sulphuric acid will be converted into sodium sulphate to be used in making laundry detergent while the plastic will be sold for recycling.

The Royal Canadian Mint is marking the 10th anniversary of the Gold Maple Leaf, the world’s most popular investment coin, with an assortment of special collectors editions of the Gold, Platinum and Silver Maple Leaf coin. The Mint launched the original Gold Maple Leaf coin, which is struck from gold blanks of 0.9999 fineness, in September, 1979.
