Memorial at Kirkland Lake

After six years of work by artists and fundraising efforts, a Miners’ Memorial was unveiled recently at Kirkland Lake, Ont., which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

The president of local 4584 of the United Steelworkers, Steve Yee, says the monument, which stands at the entrance to the gold mining town, is a way “to pay tribute to the miners and create something families can visit, and where children can see what their parents do underground.”

He adds that during the past 60 years in Ontario, more than 1,600 miners have been killed on the job.

The memorial stands 32 ft. high and is made of black granite, steel and brass.
