The impact of Latin American mining on Canada will be the subject of an address by Sir Ian MacGregor at the Dec. 16 luncheon of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum at the Royal York Hotel.
A native of Scotland, MacGregor worked in the aluminum and steel industries in the United Kingdom before serving with the British Ministry of Supply in Washington, D.C., during the Second World War.
He became an investment banker and partner with Lehman Bros., and later a partner in Lazard Freres and a director of Lazard Bros. of London. He retired in 1990.
During the 1980s, MacGregor served as chairman of British Steel Corp. and then chairman of the National Coal Board (British Coal Corp.). He is now a partner in a New York investment bank.
