Regarding the article “Haileybury teacher should be recognized” (T.N.M., Apr. 22/91), I fully support Russell Thompkins’ nomination of Ozzie Walli to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. I met Ozzie shortly after returning to the Cobalt, Ont., area after the Second World War.
He was a fine gentleman, a first-class teacher and above all he was a great motivator of young people. He lit “ambition fires” in many, first with the returning veterans and later with the young people who flocked from many parts of the world during the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s (the majority of whom were, of course, Canadian). In addition, Walli was a builder. I served on the advisory board when the expansion was initiated and completed somewhat later. That expansion turned the Haileybury School of Mines into a world-class mining school.
