The Nova Scotia and federal governments recently signed a $10-million co-operation agreement on mineral development. The province will contribute $3 million and the federal government, $7 million.
The new 3-year agreement extends the activities initiated under an existing pact and introduces several new programs, including a reclamation and environment initiative to emphasize sustainable development and land use, a prospectors assistance initiative to provide training and assistance to individuals wishing to pursue prospecting, and a coal-bed methane initiative to study the potential of sources of methane gas found in the province’s coalfields.
The agreement provides funds to demonstrate improved techniques for returning mine properties to general use. It also provides for studies on new uses for mine waste products and for assessment of the impact on the environment of mining operations.
