LETTERS TO THE EDITOR — Geoscience Canada `educates’ laymen

In the column “Geologists adapt to changing times” (T.N.M., June 15/92), Patrick Whiteway highlighted some of the difficulties The Geological Association of Canada (GAC) currently faces.

The column contains two errors concerning Geoscience Canada. First, it is not a magazine but a journal. Its mandate, as the primary GAC publication, is to publish timely papers that will inform and educate the non-specialist. We, therefore, accept and publish a wide range of materials. However, papers are subjected to a careful review prior to acceptance, similar to the peer review processes of other journals.

Second, and perhaps more important in the context of Mr. Whiteway’s article, Geoscience Canada is published quarterly, not monthly. A monthly publication rate would greatly increase the GAC’s current difficulties, and would far outstrip our capability.
