Letters to the Editor 16 died at Paymaster

I have been a fond reader of The Northern Miner for years and noticed (N.M., Aug 29/88) where Richard Buell quotes about the accident at the Paymaster mine in his Timmins report, and about Black River-Matheson town council getting nasty about mining (prospecting). Well, to get his figures straight it was Feb 2, 1945 and the hour was about 9:30 a.m. when the accident happened. You see my father was cutting the manager’s hair — Charles Cook was his name.

Buell quotes in his article that a few miners died in the accident. Well, there were 16 miners who died. Rolly Poirier Timmins, Ont.
