Last bauxite mines closed in U.S.

The last operating bauxite mines in the United States have been closed by Alcoa after 91 years of operation. The mines, situated near Little Rock, Ark., are adjacent to Alcoa’s Arkansas operations which include a bauxite refinery and alumina chemical facilities. The refining operations, which produced some 275,000 tonnes of alumina per year, are also being shut down.

Alcoa said the mining and refining operations were shut down because of insufficient reserves of bauxite that are economical to mine and refine. The closures will result in the layoff and retirement of about 200 people.
