Kidd Creek back to running order after Jan 5 fire

Operations at the Kidd Creek metallurgical complex in Timmins are in high gear once again, following a fire Jan. 5 at the company’s concentrate loadout building.

The fire destroyed three discharge belts and two shuttle conveyor belts.

Spokesman John Pappone said most of the loadout operation is back to normal.

“The belts have all been replaced. Most of the fire damage has been repaired but we’re going to wait until the spring or summer to fix the roof damage,” said Pappone.

The fire began in a dry outlet chute and the flames travelled quickly toward the roof of the 32-metre-tall building.

The concentrator loadout building contains a series of conveyor belts that carry copper powder to the smelter.

There’s no precise estimate of damage but the final tally is expected to be costly. Pappone says there was no effect on production.

Kidd Creek is owned by Noranda (TSE).
