David Kerr, chairman and chief executive officer of Noranda, will be the featured speaker at the September luncheon of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM), Toronto branch. He will review Noranda’s assets and its challenges and strategies to reposition itself as a continuously profitable mining and metals player.
Kerr graduated in 1965 from McGill University in Montreal, Que., with a bachelor of science degree. Four years later, he received his designation as a chartered accountant.
He joined Edper Investments in 1971 and was appointed chief financial officer. The company was renamed Brascan in 1985 and, by then, Kerr was the company’s executive vice-president. Brascan soon purchased a block of shares in Noranda Mines, and Kerr joined Noranda as senior vice-president.
In 1997, Kerr was named Noranda’s president and chief executive officer. He is best known for spear-heading a corporate reorganization strategy that year, leading to the disposal of Noranda’s oil and gas assets and a return to the company’s mining roots.
The luncheon is scheduled for Sept. 20 at the Ontario Club in downtown Toronto. Tickets are $30 for CIM members and $40 for non-members. For more information, contact Patty Guidry at (905) 642-3000.
