Inco miner dies at Shebandowan after rock fall

Renato Brigo of Thunder Bay died in a rockfall on April 18 while working the midnight shift. He was 42, married and the father of two children.

Government and mine officials cordoned off an area surrounding the mine’s 366 m level where Brigo was working. The accident happened while Brigo was installing rock bolts and a support screen, according to a spokesman for the United Steelworkers of America, which represents the miners.

“His partner, who was operating equipment about 21 metres away, was unharmed by the fall,” said Moses Sheppard, a union advisor.

An employee of McIsaac Exploration of Sudbury, Ont., Brigo was one of the first miners to be rehired at the Shebandowan mine after it resumed operations last month after a 3-year shut down.

Sheppard told The Northern Miner that a lack of mining inspectors is partly responsible for accidents.

Brigo was the sixth miner to die in Northern Ontario this year and the third in the last month. Mining operations are continuing at the Shandowan mine, located about 100 km west of Thunder Bay.
