Inco fined $50,000 for polluting creek

Inco (TSE) was recently fined $50,000 for polluting a creek near Sudbury, Ont. The nickel producer has also agreed to provide $50,000 for the rehabilitation of fish habitats in the Sudbury area.

Inco was charged after the Whistle seepage pond overflowed in 1988, releasing toxic mine waste into the Meatbird Creek.

The Sudbury judge also ordered the company to train its employees about its waste-treatment facilities. The training program will apply to operations’ personnel only, said an Inco spokesman.
