IN BRIEF — New zinc plant cuts emissions

A new zinc pressure-leach plant is operating at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting’s facilities in Flin Flon, Man.

The plant, which can produce 104,000 tons of slab zinc per year, uses technology developed by Sherritt (TSE).

The facility marks the fourth commercial application of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Technology. Moreover, it is the first zinc plant based solely on pressure leaching, which eliminates roasters and associated sulphur dioxide emissions.

The companies say the plant will reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by about 25% and airborne particulates by about 50% from the HudBay metallurgical complex at Flin Flon.
