In French Guiana, Golden Star Resources (TSE) and Cambior (TSE) are evaluating their jointly held Yaou gold project.
The partners acquired the 150-sq.-km concession three months ago from BHP and Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Miniere (BRGM).
About 10% of the area has been explored using airborne magnetometer and radiometric surveys, soil geochemical sampling, mechanized trenching and drilling.
Currently, exploration is focused on three zones: A, B and C-L, which lie to the south.
Drilling and trenching at the 350-metre-long C-L zone indicate that mineralization is hosted within several deformed and carbonatized quartz-diorite dykes, and that it is associated with pyrite. Results from seven holes include 4.4 grams gold per tonne over 52 metres and 3.2 grams over 65 metres. Other samples averaged between 0.9 and 6.8 grams over 4-46 metres. The drilling has tested the zone to a depth of only 85 metres.
The A and B zones were previously tested by BHP and BRGM, with the former returning a channel sample that averaged 5 grams over 137
metres. This zone will be drilled by the joint venture in November. Mapping and preliminary trenching of the B zone point to a mineralized zone 700 metres long. Two trenches by the joint venture averaged 1.4 grams over 28 metres and 1.8 grams over 43 metres.
A resource estimate is expected in the second quarter of 1995. Previous estimates by BHP and BRGM indicate that the area hosts 28 million grams (900,000 oz.) gold.
