GOLDEN BITS

Diamond Drill Bits

New diamond drill bits from Utah-based Christensen Mining Products increase footage per bit by 15% to 20%, the company says.

These “gold” bits, as they are called, combine friable diamonds with a new, diamond-embedded matrix. This matrix is designed to expose the diamonds continually. The new design delivers a more consistent cutting surface and more consistent penetration rate, the company says.

The bit has been designed especially for hard, dense, consolidated, non-abrasive rock formations.

Multi-gas Monitor

A multi-gas monitor using a new infra-red photo acoustic measurement technique has been introduced by Bruel & Kjaer Canada of Montreal.

The unit, called the Type 1302, can detect as little as 0.001 parts per million of five different gases simultaneously. Cycle times are as low as 1.75 minutes for water vapor. Interfering gases are automatically compensated for, the company says. The 1.75×3.95×3-cm instrument weighs nine kilograms.

Storage Sheds

Lightweight fiberglass storage units, available in two models, with capacities of 22 and 8.8 cubic metres, are available from Kwik-Stor Canada of Barrie, Ont.

The larger unit, measuring 2.4×2.4x 3.7 metres, is equipped with a roll-up steel door and a built-in motion-detector (which acts as an alarm). The small units measure 1.8x2x2.4 metres.

The units, which can be set up in minutes by bolting them to a concrete slab, can be refrigerated, heated, insulated and divided. Shelves can be included. Multiple units can be stacked for ease of shipping.

Generator Sets

A new range of generator sets has been introduced by Detroit Diesel Corp.

Powered by Perkins engines, the new generators range from 20 to 100 kw. Features include a fuel tank large enough for eight hours of operation; line circuit breaker; batteries, cables and battery-charging alternator; an industrial silencer; heavy-duty air filter; and coolant and lube oil.

24-hr. Fire Protection

A system for detecting fires in load-haul-dump machines and other mine equipment has been introduced by Ansul Fire Protection of Marinette, Wis.

The Checkfire sc system, as it is called, is a self-contained, self-powered and self-checking unit which features a multi-purpose dry chemical extinguishing agent.

Eighteen systems have been installed on mining equipment in North America since the system was designed. They have performed well in a variety of vehicles and climates, the company says.

The system provides 24-hr. protection and runs on its own internal lithium battery module.

Two Drills in One

A compact drill rig which allows miners to switch from in-the-hole drilling to longhole drilling with a simple change of drill head and centralizer, has been introduced by Maclean Engineering & Marketing.

Called the MEM-837, the unit has been designed to operate in areas with a back height of nine feet.

Big Boulder Breaker

A new 15,000-J hydaulic rock breaker, called the TB-2225, has been introduced by Teledyne Canadian Mining Products.

A nitrogen cushion chamber absorbs piston recoil, and hydraulic cushioning of the piston stroke protects the breaker.

The unit weighs 4.8 tonnes and delivers 15,000 J of energy at a rate of 500 impacts per minute.

Excavator Bucket Thumb

A “thumb” can now be attached to 36-inch-wide and 42-inch-wide hydraulic excavator buckets.

One unit, being marketed by Balderson Inc. of Edmonton, Alta., allows operators to sort through material such as rebar, manhandle large boulders and hold on to awkward items such as i beams, even in tight spots.

The thumb can be adapted to either Cat or Balderson buckets. The teeth on the thumb interlock with the teeth on the bucket.

Three New Hammers

Three hydraulic impact hammers, said to offer greater reliability and longer operating life, have been introduced by Ohio-based Allied.

The new hammers, model 780CS, 795CS and 805CS, deliver 5,000 to 10,000 ft.-lb. of force per blow.

A unique box-style design suspends the hammer’s internal working body inside a box enclosure. This isolates vibration forces, reduces recoil forces and allows the hammer to work more efficiently, the company says.

The hammer’s body is completely encased by a guide system that includes two, wear-resistant polyurethane plates. Another cushion, on the upper side of the body cover, helps absorb contact and recoil forces which cause hammer and carrier wear.

The lower part of the box is reinforced with special abrasion-resistant steel for longer life.
