Gold in Ontario

The first gold discovered in the Canadian Shield was in 1866 when Marcus Powell discovered a cave whose walls contained “gold in the form of leaves and nuggets.” Since then there have been major gold mining camps spring up in the Lake of the Woods area, Larder Lake, The Porcupine, Kirkland Lake, Red Lake and Hemlo.
