Louis Gignac, chief executive officer of Cambior (TSE), has been elected chairman of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC).
He replaces Placer Dome’s Anthony Petrina who recently retired. In his opening remarks to the MAC’s directors, Gignac underscored the need to become more involved in public affairs. He also highlighted the importance of the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI), a program of consultation among environmental activists, aboriginal peoples, organized labor, the mining industry and government.
He believes the WMI will result in better public understanding of mining and more appropriate public policies.
Other officers elected were First Vice-Chairman Michael Sopko (Inco), Second Vice-Chairman Walter Segsworth (Westmin) and Treasurer Ian Bayer (Hemlo Gold).
