Giant charged in mine fatality

Gold producer Giant Yellowknife Mines (TSE) and one of its supervisors have been charged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with an April 6, 1989, cave-in that killed a Timmins miner. Giant and its supervisor, Wallace Mann, allegedly failed to ensure that every reasonable precaution to protect workers under the circumstances were carried out. It is also alleged Giant failed to provide appropriate health and safety information for the worker.

Fatality victim Gaetane Lacroix was working at the McIntyre mine in Schumacher at the time of the incident. A partner working with Lacroix escaped uninjured.

Giant will appear in court later this month.
