Australian mining giant BHP Billiton (BHP-N) has contracted Fluor Corp. (FLR-N) and Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) to continue work at BHP’s Pilbara iron ore mine in Western Australia.
The deal, worth $500 million, will focus on the expansion of BHP’s iron ore operations at Pilbara, including management of the construction program at the project and engineering for specific elements of the mine, port and rail works.
Fluor and SKM established the Mine and Port Development joint venture at Pilbara in 2001.
Since then, the engineering joint venture has worked through four phases of its Rapid Growth Project and is working towards phases 5 and 6.
In 2004, the joint venture was awarded the Institute of Engineers Australia National award and the Railway Technical Society of Australasia award.
Fluor is based out of Irving, Texas. SKM is based in Australia.
