Falco to close Lockerby mine

With the price of nickel in the doldrums, Falconbridge has announced its intention to shut down indefinitely the Lockerby mine in Sudbury, Ont.

As of June 1, the high-grade producer will be closed as a result of the low nickel price (about $US2.65 at presstime), as well as high operating costs. The mine produced 3,400 tonnes of ore in 1993.

The company will use the closure period to study the cost of deepening the shaft so as to reach high-grade ore at depth.
