FALCO’s MYSTERY MINE

Falconbridge is building a mine in Sudbury, but not much is known about it. And those who do know the details aren’t talking.

Although Falconbridge has made some major decisions with regard to the mine, information about the project has been difficult to obtain.

Despite the mystery, here is what we do know about the Craig mine:

* Over the next four years, Falconbridge is committed to spending $280 million to develop the Craig mine and modernize the nearby mill at the Strathcona mine. Situated between the 2,000-ft. and 4,000-ft. levels near the company’s Onaping mine on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, the Craig orebody contains about 16.5 million tons grading 2% nickel.

* Full production, at about a million tons per year, is scheduled for 1991, but development ore is expected to be processed this year. The mine will eventually produce 60% of the company’s Sudbury output.

In 1988, drifts were driven from the Onaping mine shaft on three levels: the 2,000-ft., 3,000-ft. and 4,000-ft levels.
