EXPLORATION 1997 — Tri-syndicate stakes more claims in Quebec

The syndicate formed by Quebec city-based juniors Virginia Gold Mines (VIA-M), Vior Mining Exploration (Vio-M) and Azimut Exploration (AZM-M) has staked an additional 179 claims south of the Lac Volant nickel-copper-cobalt discovery northeast of Sept-Iles, Que.

The 28-sq.-km claim block was staked based on results received from an airborne geophysical survey that was flown after the area was reopened by the Quebec government. The area was withdrawn from staking in late 1996 so that government geologists could explore its claims without being distracted by competing claim-stakers.

The syndicate now owns about 1,980 claims in the area, as well as 526 claims (situated closer to the Lac Volant showing) in which Kennecott Canada can earn a half interest by spending $2 million on exploration over three years.

Line-cutting has been carried out over the 526 claims, with ground geophysical surveys due to follow in March and April.

Elsewhere in Quebec, Virginia is exploring various gold properties, including La Grand Sud in the James Bay region. A drilling program is under way, testing several targets within a 5-km radius.
