Essay contest to be part of mining symposium

A 2-day international symposium on mine planning and equipment selection will be held Nov 3-4 in Calgary, Alta.

The event is being organized by the surface mining laboratory at Devon, Alta., of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) and the faculty of continuing education of the University of Calgary, in association with the International Journal of Surface Mining.

Subjects to be covered at the symposium will include design of surface mines, surface and underground mining methods, surface mining equipment, applications of computer and microprocessor technology to the mining industry, continuous mining systems, off- highway trucks, and drilling and blasting.

In conjunction with the symposium, the organizing committee is inviting undergraduate students in Canada to submit essays on any of the above subjects. The winner, to be announced at the symposium, will be awarded a $500 prize. Essays, not to exceed 2,500 words, must be submitted not later than June 1 this year, to J. E.
