Engineering Act of Nova Scotia to include geologists

Geologists, geophysicists and engineers in Nova Scotia have agreed on a mechanism to include geoscientists in the province’s Engineering Act, opening the way for professional registration of geologists.

Discussions between the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and a committee of Nova Scotian geologists have been going on since 1990. A set of proposals to amend the Engineering Act was approved at the Association’s annual meeting in 1994 and have since been submitted to the government for inclusion in an amending bill, to be introduced in the Legislature.

Geologists and geophysicists are registered professions under the Engineering Acts in British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland and both Territories, and under separate legislation in Quebec. Amending bills are awaiting introduction in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and may shortly be proposed in Ontario and New Brunswick.
