Endangered falcons take flight at Montana mine site

The endangered peregrine falcon will once again spread its wings over central Montana, thanks to the efforts of Canyon Resources and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Three falcons were released as part of reclamation activity at the Kendall gold-silver mine near Lewistown. Five more birds will be released later this year, with more to follow in the coming years.

The species, native to the area, was nearly wiped out by the use of dichloro-diphenyl-trichloro-ethane (DDT), a pesticide used in the 1960s. The high rock walls of the Kendall open-pit gold-silver project, where production ceased last year, are being used to provide a habitat for the birds.

Reclamation at Kendall also includes recontouring and revegetation.
