Elliot Lake lab bears Coates’ name

An Elliot Lake laboratory has been named the Donald F. Coates Building in honor of the late Dr. D.F. Coates. It is a section of the Mining Research Laboratories at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), the main research arm of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. Coates was responsible for the startup and staffing of the original Elliot Lake Laboratory in 1964. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1948, followed by appointments at McGill and Carleton universities. He continued his career as a mining research consultant until he joined the Mines branch as head of the Mining Research Section in 1963.

In 1975 Coates became Director- General of CANMET. In this capacity, he supervised research and development programs on the production, processing and utilization of minerals, fuels and metals.

His book Rock Mechanics Principles, originally published in English and French, was translated into Spanish and Chinese. Coates also contributed to the publication of the Pit Slope Manual, of which more than 25,000 copies have been sold worldwide as a basic reference in the design of open pit mines.

Coates died in 1981.
