Dona Lake mine fined after accident

A workplace safety violation at the Dona Lake mine near Pickle Lake, Ont., has resulted in the operating company being fined $85,000.

The worker was checking a problem on a conveyor belt on an electrical stacker-conveyor. He was standing on a ladder when rock on the conveyor began to fall. The ladder slipped and, as the worker reached up to avoid falling, his hands were drawn into the stacker and severed.

Dona Lake Gold Mine pleaded guilty to health and safety charges, in that it had not provided a safe working platform and had not prevented material from falling backward on to the conveyor. The owner of the machine, George Armstrong Co. Ltd. of Fort Frances, Ont., which was renting it to Dona Lake, faces charges in the case as well.

A trial was tentatatively scheduled for Nov. 1.
