A portion of the crown pillar at Hope Brook Gold’s (TSE) underground mine on the southwest coast of Newfoundland collapsed recently, but the company reported no injuries at the site. As a result of the collapse, one of the underground stopes now connects with the floor of the open pit mine at the gold operation.
Hope Brook had been planning to collapse the crown pillar when the cave-in occurred, according to President John Auston. He said the company will continue a controlled collapse as part of an overall mining plan.
