Cordilleran Roundup set for B.C.

A conference focusing on all aspects of Canadian and international exploration will be held from Jan. 27-30 at various sites throughout Vancouver, B.C.

Entitled “Pathways’98: Cordilleran Roundup and Exploration Methods,” the conference will include technical sessions, short courses, poster sessions, a core shack and field trips.

Technical sessions include: British Columbia and Yukon exploration highlights during 1997; the discovery of the Slave craton diamond field; exploration strategies for magmatic nickel-copper-cobalt deposits at Voisey’s Bay; the discovery of the Cannington silver-lead-zinc deposit in Australia; low-tech, low-budget exploration; exploration risks; an overview of the Sadiola Hill gold deposit in Mali; exploration techniques at the Goldstrike mine in Nevada; biosystems in operations; and field, air and spaceborne mineralogical exploration.

Short courses include: risk in international exploration; metallogeny of volcanic arcs; recent developments in Cordilleran geology; quality control; and community relations in Latin America.

Scheduled field trips will visit Ontario’s Superior geological province, as well as mining operations in British Columbia, Australia and California.

The core shack will feature samples from operations in Canada, Tanzania, Mexico, Indonesia, Portugal, Russia, Peru and Eastern Europe.

Hosted by the British Columbia & Yukon Chamber of Mines and the Society for Economic Geologists, the convention is being held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Robson Square Conference Centre and the Hotel Vancouver.
