Con mine closes doors

The Con gold mine, in Yellowknife, N.W.T., has shut down after 65 years of operation, owing to ore depletion.

As a result, owner Miramar Mining has had to issue about 190 pink slips.

The territorial government is counting on those workers’ finding jobs elsewhere in the region. If many workers leave the territories, the government could face a multi-million dollar reduction in its transfer payments from Ottawa.

Since the first dor gold bar was poured in September 1938, the Con mine has produced over 5.5 million oz. of gold
