The News Roundup article “SNC begins Pascua work” (The Northern Miner, May 1/00) stated that SNC-Lavalin began site development in February, with the implication that construction of the Pascua mine was under way. This is not correct.
SNC-Lavalin was awarded by Barrick Gold (ABX-T) the contract for basic engineering and procurement work on the wet process plant and related water systems and reclaim pumping and piping services. The work makes up about US$250 million of the US$950-million cost estimate for Pascua. Barrick plans to start construction at Pascua in December 2000.
